We finally get our first look at Solo: A Star Wars Story courtesy of a TV spot during this year’s Super Bowl LII. Four months before the film hits theaters, Lucasfilm has kicked off their marketing for their upcoming flick. Just the second of their Star Wars anthologies, the prequel blockbuster will take fans back in time to when everyone’s favorite nerf herder was still learning his conniving ways around the galaxy. An official Solo synopsis may have been released, but nothing significant was revealed. We already know that the project, in which Alden Ehrenreich debuts as the younger incarnation of Harrison Ford’s iconic character, will also include younger versions of Lando Calrissian played by Donald Glover and Chewbacca, but we’re still uncertain what narrative specifics the movie is going to tread.
It’s no secret how tumultuous the production for Solo was, especially considering the surprising firing of original directors, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who were eventually replaced by a more seasoned filmmaker in Ron Howard. It’s still unclear what went down behind closed doors, but word has it that the directing duo didn’t really get along with Lucasfilm execs Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan. It’s safe to say that it was a PR nightmare for the film studio for some time, which is certainly why they need to go above and beyond to market the project so as to ease up people’s concerns over its quality considering that it was technically rushed.
Now, we finally get our first look at the movie courtesy of a TV spot that aired during the Super Bowl game between Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. Check out the clip above.
Despite all the negativity that surrounds the movie, the trailer looks pretty cool — with a handful of shots that piques the interest of fans who may still be on the fence about a Han Solo origins story. While we did not get much plot details, we, however, got good looks at our principal cast members including Woody Harrelson’s rugged-looking character, Beckett, Emilia Clarke’s yet-to-be-named role and the swagger-oozing Glover as young Lando Calrissian. The last reveal was our first official live-action glimpse of Ehrenreich (albeit still obstructed with those iron bars) as the iconic galactic smuggler, who, in fairness, has an uncanny resemblance to Ford (perhaps it’s the hair).
Our first look at Solo has been a long time coming. There had been a few instances that people expected for any sort of marketing to drop, but Lucasfilm continued to delay promoting the flick. As for the reason why, no one entirely knows, but it may have something to do with the bad publicity surrounding it since the director switch controversy. Some, however, may argue that because of that major kerfuffle, folks behind the project should’ve actually doubled their efforts in selling the flick. Its release date being too close to Star Wars: The Last Jedi may also be a factor considering that the studio wants both films to have their fair share in the limelight.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait that much longer for the release of new footage as the full trailer is scheduled to drop tomorrow on GMA. With Disney’s marketing machine finally all revved up for Solo: A Star Wars Story, we expect to learn more about the anthology film in the weeks to come. From then, we’ll get a better sense if the decision to make an off-shoot film based on one of the saga’s most beloved heroes with a different actor portraying the role was a good call or not.
